ADA Policy

Marrero’s Guest Mansion is a Victorian home, located in the Historic District of Key West, and is therefore subject to follow guidelines and ordinances issued by the Historical Architectural Review Commission (otherwise known as HARC). The structure complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). While the act does not require the property to provide accessible rooms in all situations due to its age and architectural significance, the proprietors are committed to doing what is economically feasible to accommodate the needs of our guests with disabilities.

Building information and accessibility aspects of note:

This historic home was constructed in 1889 and its architecture and structural designs are highlights of the home, but may present some restriction to certain guests depending on physical abilities. The entrance to the home is from the front portico, which has 7 stairs followed by a single step into the main foyer.

Access to all indoor common areas, including the parlor where breakfast and happy hour are served, requires the use of stairs; the mansion does not have an elevator. The mansion has 13 guest rooms configured as follows: 1 room separate from the main house and accessible by exterior brick pathway and ramp; 5 rooms on the first floor; 7 rooms on the second floor.

The guest accessible main areas of the house have doors 32 inches or greater in width; however certain features like narrow hallways and multiple room levels of the original building, may provide complications for wheelchair access. Our staff will do our best to communicate accessibility specifics when details are requested, so please do not hesitate to call and ask if clarification is needed.

Our ADA policy includes:

  • Advising on our website that the building has some narrow doorways and use of stairs is required for access to common areas, and 12 of our 13 guest rooms.
  • Instructing our web designer to include, where feasible, web site compliance with ADA requirements and accepted guidelines for web accessibility as part of the frequent updating of the property’s website.
  • The staff and management team is committed to reporting annually to the owners on the steps taken to support this policy and to address the evolving industry guidelines to meet the applicable accessibility standards.

All of our guest rooms include closed captioning available on the TV, and upon request we will provide an ADA compliant shower stool, an ADA compliant raised toilet seat with support arm rails and secure locking, and a hearing-impared smoke detector.

Please be assured that our efforts are ongoing. If specific questions arise about the accessibility of the website or the structure, please contact us at [email protected] or (305) 294-6977.
